Lead water service lines in Gatineau

In Gatineau, replacing the private part of a lead water service line is mandatory and is the owner’s responsibility (By-law 923-2023). The City estimates that about 1,600 homes built before 1970 have one. The pipe is probably lead if it is grey, doesn’t ring when tapped, shows shiny metal when scratched and doesn’t attract a magnet. According to the City’s guide, the contractor must hold RBQ licence 1.4 (roads and piping); the owner notifies the City through 311 at least 20 working days before the work and no later than 10 days after, then sends proof within 30 days. The City advises planning the work between May and October.
