Heating, cooling and heat pumps: the region’s figures

Heating, cooling and heat pumps: 3,413 companies of the metropolitan region appear in the RBQ data of November 3, 2026, out of 8,081 across Quebec (42%). This trade ranks 3 of the 15 in our lists for the region.

Installing a wall-mounted or central heat pump, replacing a furnace, adding an air exchanger or converting oil heating: this work requires a subcategory 15 RBQ licence (15.1 to 15.10 depending on the appliance and the fuel), issued by the CMMTQ. Assistance programmes, such as Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert or the Québec government’s Chauffez vert, have their own conditions on the appliance and the installer.

Spread across the region

Where they are based: the Island of Montréal 1,111, Laval 485, the South Shore 918 and the North Shore 899. Best-served area of the island: West Island, with 144; then Saint-Laurent (114), Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles (95), Saint-Léonard (83) and Ahuntsic-Cartierville (75). Laval and the North and South Shores: Laval (485), Terrebonne (178), Longueuil (148), Mirabel (138), Mascouche (100), Blainville (99), Repentigny (76) and Brossard (61).

Seniority on the island: 63% of the 1,112 companies have been licensed for at least 10 years (the longest since 1983), and 10 joined in the past 90 days. The same companies often hold other licences: renovation (837), stoves and fireplaces (761) and concrete and foundations (191). Published phone: 1,111 of them (1,089 with a 514 or 438 area code).

Preparing your request

Each type of system has its own subcategory: forced air, natural gas, oil, hot-water heating, propane, ventilation or refrigeration (heat pumps and air conditioners). Check that the licence covers the system you are having installed.

Give the area to heat or cool, the current system, the year the building was built, what you know of its insulation and where the outdoor unit would go (noise, neighbours, municipal by-law). If you count on a grant, read its current conditions before you sign and ask the company to confirm them in writing.

RBQ licence to check for this work: 15.1 Forced-air heating systems, 15.2 Natural gas burner systems, 15.3 Oil burner systems, 15.4 Hydronic heating systems, 15.6 Propane, 15.7 Residential ventilation, 15.8 Ventilation, 15.9 Small refrigeration systems, 15.10 Refrigeration.
