Renovation permits in Québec

Québec City offers the Assistant-permis, which tells you whether your project needs a permit or a certificate of authorization. The rules vary with the work and with where the property is.

Lead water service lines in Québec

In Québec City, the owner of a building served by a lead private water service line must replace it within four years of learning about it, on their own or through a notice from the City (By-law R.V.Q. 2884). A City permit is required before the work. Buildings built before 1980 are likely to have lead components: a lead pipe is grey and dull and keeps a mark when gently rubbed with a screwdriver (wear gloves). For the City’s assistance program, excavation must be done by a specialized contractor and the plumbing by a CMMTQ member.
