Useful details for a heat pump

A heat pump is chosen for the home it has to heat and cool. Give the living area, the number of floors and rooms, the year the building went up and what you know of its insulation and windows. Also say how the home is heated today: electric baseboards, a forced-air furnace, a hot-water boiler or oil.

For a central heat pump the condition of the existing ducts matters; for a wall unit, the number of rooms to serve. Note the amperage of the electrical panel if it is marked, where the outdoor unit would go (yard, balcony, roof) and how far the neighbours are: your municipality may regulate the noise and the placement of these units.

Which licence installs a heat pump

According to Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert page (in French), for an eligible wall-mounted or central heat pump the company must hold subcategory 15.1, 15.7 or 15.8, plus 15.9 or 15.10 of the RBQ licence, and belong to the professional corporation of its trade; electrical work falls under subcategory 16. According to the RBQ notice (in French), 15.9 covers air conditioners with a cooling capacity of up to 20 kW; the regulation (B-1.1, r. 9, Schedule II) extends it to the heating and air-conditioning units of a forced-air system of up to 40 kW when the company also holds 15.1, 15.7 or 15.8. The programme’s conditions change: read its page again before you sign.

Frequently asked questions

How many companies will get my heat pump request?

Your request goes out in waves of 5 companies whose licence covers heating and cooling, near your city: at confirmation, after 24 hours and then after 72 hours if fewer than 2 companies have answered, 15 at most. We cannot guarantee any quote; each company decides for itself.

Is the request free?

Entirely free for you, with no commission and no commitment. Only companies may pay, for a “Featured” advertising placement that is always labelled as such and does not change the order of the lists.

Who sees the details of my home?

The companies that receive the request always see the type of work, the city, the timing and the budget. They read your description if you tick the box that allows it, and get your contact details only with your consent. The home’s address is never asked for.

Is there a grant for a heat pump?

Hydro-Québec runs the LogisVert programme, with its own conditions on the unit and on the company that installs it. Amounts and rules change: read the programme’s official page before you sign, and ask the company to confirm in writing that the installation qualifies.
