What to tell a plumber

Name the fixture or the part of the plumbing involved: the water heater (its size in gallons and its age), a sink, a toilet, a shower, the drain stack, a floor drain, a backwater valve or the water service line. Say which floor the work is on, whether the basement is finished and whether the pipes can be reached through a ceiling or a wall.

For a bathroom or kitchen renovation, describe what moves: a fixture in a new spot often needs new drains and new supply lines. Mention the year the building went up and the materials you have seen (copper, plastic, cast iron, lead). If the work touches the water service or the sewer, ask who gets the permit from the city or the borough.

Who may do your plumbing work

Plumbing requires subcategory 15.5 of the RBQ licence. Plumbing companies most often hold it from the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ), which issues the licence to its members. Before you sign, check in the register that the licence is active and includes 15.5, and ask for a written contract that shows the number.
