Lead water service lines in Mascouche
In Mascouche, the City says lead is generally not in the municipal network: it comes mostly from the connecting pipes (service lines) between some houses and the network. Lead service lines were installed in single-family homes and buildings, especially between 1940 and 1955, and even into the 1970s; solder in indoor plumbing can also contain lead. Each year the City samples about 30 homes or buildings, from July 1 to October 1, starting with those built or connected before 1955, then before 1970, then before 1990. If a sample is over the standard, a plumber hired by the City may do a visual check; if lead is found on the private side, the owner does the work at their own expense. The service line may need replacing on both sides, for example during planned City work or when an owner wants to replace the part on their property: the private side is at the owner’s expense, the public side is paid by the City.
