Lead water service lines in Saguenay

In Saguenay, the public network has no lead pipes; the risk comes mostly from the service lines of buildings built before 1970 (eight units or fewer, and post-war houses of the 1940s–1950s). A service line has two sections, the City’s and the owner’s, divided at the stop valve, usually outside on the property; if both are lead, they should be replaced at the same time. A lead pipe is grey, does not ring when tapped, shows shiny metal when scratched and does not attract a magnet. Home built in 1975 or earlier: the City offers lead testing of the water (online sign-up, campaign from June 1 to October 1). Until then: run the water a few minutes after it turns cold, clean the aerator, cook with cold water; if needed, a filter certified to NSF/ANSI 53. Boiling the water does not help.
