Lead water service lines in Sherbrooke

In Sherbrooke, the City says that since 2013 it has found no lead pipes on the public side. Lead can still come from the private part: a service line from before 1980, lead plumbing inside, taps and valves bought before 2014. Single-family homes and buildings with fewer than eight units built before 1980 are most at risk. To check, find the shut-off valve in the basement, on the front-wall side: a lead pipe is dull grey, doesn’t attract a magnet, scratches easily and doesn’t ring when tapped. The City offers free tap-water sampling every year. If in doubt, run the cold water, drink and cook with cold water and use a filter certified to NSF/ANSI 53 or 58; boiling the water does not help.
