According to the City of Carignan, when the property is not subject to a PIIA (architectural integration plan), some work does not need a permit: replacing doors and windows with the same size, or changing the type of flooring, when the work is worth $10,000 or less; painting, staining or varnishing; electrical work; replacing exterior wall or roof covering with the same type without changing the structure; or interior maintenance under $10,000 that does not affect the structure, the foundations, a partition, the roof slope or the floor area. A plan from a technologist or an architect is required for work that affects the structure, such as adding or removing a partition or changing a door or window opening. You can apply for a permit online; if your type of application is not offered there, it is filed at City Hall.
