According to the City of Chambly, a residential renovation needs a permit when the work is worth $5,000 or more. A residential extension (including an attached garage or carport) also needs a permit, as does turning an attached carport into a garage. The City has a “Branchement Réfection” permit type for sewer and water service lines, which includes the French drain. Installing a heat pump or an air conditioner does not need a permit, but the unit must follow the municipal rules on location and noise; fences, walls and hedges do not need one either. For an extension, alteration or renovation, the City asks for a detailed description of the work, plans, an estimate of its cost and the contact details of the applicant and the builder. You apply online or in person at the urban planning department.
