According to the City of La Prairie, repairing, renovating or altering a house needs a building permit. Minor maintenance work does not need one if the foundations and load-bearing structure are not changed, the floor area and number of dwellings do not increase, the work is worth less than $5,000, and it is neither covered by a PIIA (architectural integration plan) nor located in the historic district: painting, replacing flooring, or replacing a window with one of the same size, for example. In the Vieux-La Prairie heritage site, all exterior work also needs an authorization from the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications, and in certain zones a PIIA must be approved before the permit. Many permit applications can be made online.

In La Prairie, the municipal distribution system contains no lead, but it can still be found in tap water: some plumbing parts, such as service lines and solder, may contain it, especially in buildings built before the 1980s. Each year, under the Regulation respecting the quality of drinking water, the City takes samples at strategic points of its network to measure copper and lead, and it invites residents to have their water tested for free, especially if their home was built before 1980 and is connected to the public water system (sign-up with the Engineering Department; in 2026, sampling ran from July 1 to September 30).
